Hair Transplants: What To Expect Before and After Your Procedure

There are 2 major options when considering hair transplant surgery. These are as follows:

  • Follicular Unit Extension (FUE) - each hair follicle is removed individually from the back of the neck or side of the head since these areas are not prone to hair loss. Because there are no scalpels or cutting, there is very little scar formation and less recovery time
  • Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) - the strips of donor follicles are taken from the back of the neck of the individual and placed anywhere in the desired balding region.

Both of these procedures are permanent and will continue to grow in their new location for the rest of the person’s life.

A persons crown can be particularly challenging for several reasons. First, the hair in this region of the head tends to be in a swirling pattern. Secondly, since it’s a rather large area, finding suitable donors may be a challenge. 2 possible solutions include transplanting to achieve a less dense result or using a Follicular Unit Extension (FUE), which was explained earlier.

The cost of surgery varies, but one must remember that no two heads are alike so neither are the costs. The cost is largely based on the number of follicular units of grafts to be placed in the balding area. Determining the number of follicular units is based on the extent of hair loss, the balding pattern, and the desired density and thickness.

Hair Transplant Recovery - A Few Tips to Make It Easier

While it does take time to recover from a hair transplant, the good news is that the recovery time is limited. Patents can go home the same day, with limited discomfort. The recovery time will depend on the severity of the hair loss and the number of grafts. The surgeon may give the patient Prednisone to reduce the swelling and antibiotics to prevent infection. Life should return to normal the day after your transplant. However there are a few tips that you should consider doing to make the recovery as quick and easy as possible. These tips are as follows:

  • Don’t overdo it. Rest is the best thing to do after surgery. Make sure you elevate the head when lying down. Also don’t do any bending which will cause unnecessary blood flow to your head.
  • Avoid aspirin for a week afterwards because aspirin things the blood. Your doctor should prescribe painkillers that are safe.
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy exercise for a week or so.

Within a week after surgery stitches will be removed. You’ll then be able to go out in public and proudly show off your new hair!
